At a conference held in “Legal and Geopolitical Considerations in Immigration and Asylum Matters”representatives of political parties, professors and figures of the legal field took part in the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Athens.

The first session “Geopolitics and Frontline States: Current Developments and Challenges in Asylum and Migration” attempted to answer questions about the harmonization of individual rights with national and European interests, the modernization of the common European asylum system, and the possibility of national economy and Greek society from immigration. Former Deputy Prime Minister Evangelos Venizelos stressed that there really is no separation between European and national interests, as they share the same foundation – European liberal democracy. And then he spoke at length about the embarrassment that characterizes the EU’s attitude. on almost all major issues, the geopolitical situation is no exception. For SYRIZA, former Minister of Immigration Dimitris Vitsas emphasized that immigration is not a problem, otherwise it would have a solution, but a multi-level phenomenon, at the center of which he placed the economic plans of the states of Western Europe. Theodoros Roussopoulos spoke not only as a ND MP, but also as President of the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), noting, among other things, how unclear the limits of freedom of choice in immigration issues are. The first session was closed by the Deputy Minister of Education and professor at Panteion University Angelos Sirygos, who referred to the 2015 refugee wave as a combination of ideologies. Mr. Sirigos, like the other three speakers, also referred to the complexity of a political solution to such a multifaceted issue as immigration.

Legal issues in the field of asylum and immigration were discussed by Maria Gavuneli, Professor of Law at the Athens University of Applied Sciences, Appellant Theodora Vitouladitis and Head of the Legal Protection Sector of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Kalliopi Stefanakis. , led by Linos-Alexandros Sisilianou, Dean of the EKPA School of Law and former President of the European Court of Human Rights.
