Sunak to Christodoulidis: Unwavering UK Support for a DDO-Based Cyprus Solution

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak sent a letter to the newly elected President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis.

In his letter, Mr. Sunak, congratulating Mr. Christodoulidis on his election as President, indicates, among other things, that cooperation between the Republic of Cyprus and the United Kingdom is determined by historical ties, close relations between the two peoples and a common vision for the future.

Mr. Sunak refers to an agreement signed last November between the United Kingdom and Cyprus, which “opens a new era of closer relations between the two countries.”

The bilateral Memorandum of Understanding, the British Prime Minister added, will strengthen bilateral relations both at the diplomatic level and in areas such as security, economics and education.

Referring to the historically close relationship between the two peoples, Mr. Sunak praised, among other things, the contribution of the 300,000 Cypriots in the diaspora, who have played an important role for both countries over the years. The contribution, which, as he notes, was noted in January last year.

With regard to the Cyprus issue, Mr. Sunak emphasizes that “the support of the United Kingdom in the process of resolving the Cyprus issue within the framework of the United Nations towards a comprehensive, fair and sustainable solution based on a bi-zone bi-communal federation with political equality remains unwavering.”

In his letter, the British Prime Minister stresses the firm commitment of newly elected President Nikos Christodoulidis to the resumption of negotiations and expresses the willingness of the United Kingdom to contribute to efforts to achieve a solution to the Cyprus problem under the auspices of the United Nations in its status as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
