French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanen said he is considering suspending the driving license of drivers who are drunk or otherwise intoxicated, DPA and EFE reported, Agerpres reported.

“I want to disenfranchise people who drive under the influence of drugs/alcohol because they are a potential danger,” Darmanin tweeted on Sunday.

Current French practice provides for the suspension of permits for a period of up to three years only in case of repeat offenses or by court order.

The proposals come in the context of a car accident on December 10 last year that involved comedian Pierre Palmade, who has been charged with negligent homicide and involuntary manslaughter for causing the accident after using cocaine and synthetic drugs.

The vehicle he was driving drifted into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with another car. His driver is still in a coma, his six-year-old son was seriously injured, and his wife, six months pregnant, was seriously injured and lost her unborn child.

This accident sparked a national debate about drunk driving.

The 54-year-old actor, who is believed to be at fault in the collision, has been ordered to wear an electronic tag and is being held in a drug addiction treatment unit pending an investigation. He has confessed several times about his long addiction to cocaine and the problems it caused him.

In an interview with the Sunday newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche, Minister Darmanin said: “My goal is to protect the next pregnant woman and the next six-year-old boy from all accidents.”

He stated that 600 people die in road accidents in France every year.
