Alexandros Ioannis Ginnis won the silver medal in slalom at the Alpine Skiing World Cup in Chamonix, France.

The gold medal was won by the Swiss Raimond Sennhausern, who took first place with a difference of only one second and two centimeters from the Greek skier, and the bronze medal was also won by the Swiss Daniel Jule.

In this context, Guinness became the first Greek to win a medal at the Alpine Skiing World Championships.

β€œIt was just a dream, the last two weeks. History for Greece, the best moment of my career,” Alexandros Guinness said, according to the Associated Press, adding, β€œI can’t believe it. I do not know what happened. I just gave it all away at the last gate.”

Post of the Hellenic Olympic Committee

In a tweet, the Hellenic Olympic Committee states: β€œIncredible success for cross-country champion Alexandros Ginnis. He won the silver medal at the Alpine Skiing World Championships in France in the technical downhill. This is the biggest success in the history of Greek skiing.

Congratulations from the Prime Minister

The Greek skier was also congratulated by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis via his Twitter account, where he wrote:
“Alexander Guinness wrote history! The first Greek to reach the podium of the Alpine Skiing World Championships, won silver in the technical downhill, aroused everyone’s admiration and filled us with pride. Well done Alexander.”

Guinness, who was a member of Team USA until 2018, was born in Greece and left at the age of 12. He became the first in Greek sports history to finish 2nd in an Olympic winter sports/competition.
