Syria: Newborn born under rubble adopted

Ayu, a child born under the rubble of a building in northwestern Syria, was adopted by her aunt and uncle after the devastating February 6 earthquake.

Aya, whose name means “miracle” in Arabic, was still connected to her mother by her umbilical cord when rescuers found her and pulled her out of the rubble.

Her entire family, mother, father and four brothers, died after their house collapsed in the city of Tsidires (Gindaros).

The baby was treated at Jihan Hospital until doctors were able to identify her relatives.

On Saturday, her aunt (i.e. her father’s sister) and her uncle finally took their niece away. The couple decided not to keep the name Aya, but to give the girl the name of her mother Aphra.

“This girl means so much to us because there is no one left in our family. It will be a memory for me, for her aunt and for all our relatives in the village,” her uncle, who held a little earthquake survivor in one hand and his newborn daughter in the other, told Reuters.

“The girls will grow up together. Before he came into our hands, there were legal procedures for confirming kinship, while we also did a DNA test, ”he added.
