Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said on Friday that the United States is “deeply concerned” by Russia’s efforts to destabilize the government of the Republic of Moldova, CNN reports.
This comes after Moldovan President Maia Sandu said earlier this week that Russia was planning a coup d’état in Moldova.
“We are deeply concerned about some of the plans that we have seen coming from Russia to try to destabilize the government,” Blinken said in a meeting with Maja Sandu in Germany on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.
“We strongly support Moldova in maintaining security, independence, territorial integrity, very important reform efforts carried out by the president and the government.”
Sandu called 2022 “an incredibly difficult year for the Republic of Moldova” and thanked the US for its support during countless challenges, including energy, economic and security.
It will be recalled that on February 13, the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, stated that Moscow has a plan to undermine the country “with the involvement of saboteurs with military training, camouflaged in civilian clothes, who will carry out violent actions, attacks on some state buildings and take hostages.”
- In recent days, discussions regarding the security of our country have appeared in the public space. President Zelenskyi’s statements about the Russian Federation’s plans to destabilize the Republic of Moldova were confirmed by our institutions.
- Russia’s plan to carry out sabotage actions on the territory of our country is not new. There were also attempts to destabilize the situation and undermine the state last fall, but they did not achieve their goal due to the prompt intervention of our security and public order agencies. In October-December, the police and SBU intervened in several cases of organized criminal elements and stopped attempts at violence.
Earlier, on February 9 in Brussels, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, said that Ukraine intercepted the plan of the Russian special services to destroy the Republic of Moldova.
Later, the Intelligence and Security Service in Chisinau confirmed that Ukraine had warned it of a Russian plan to destroy the Republic of Moldova and install a regime loyal to Moscow, and stated that “subversive activities aimed at undermining the state of the Republic of Moldova were carried out.” identified” “.
In fact, Zelensky also repeated on February 17 at the opening of the Munich Security Conference that “while we are negotiating how to strengthen our defense with modern tanks, the Kremlin is thinking about how to strangle Moldova,” Zelensky said.
