The Tor-M2KM anti-aircraft missile complex has almost no competitors in the world, according to the head of the Bureau of Military and Political Analysis in Moscow, Oleksandr Mikhailov, quoted by Lenta.
He said this during the international exhibition Aero India 2023 in the city of Bengaluru, explaining that the combat module of the air defense system can also be installed on the roofs of buildings and railway platforms.
“Then it works autonomously, its radar finds targets, calculates either independently or autonomously, hitting these targets,” said a Russian military expert.
Mikhailov noted that Tor-M2KM can protect targets at a distance of tens of kilometers from the system.
“So this is a very effective and promising complex. It is very difficult to develop and create such a complex from scratch and compete with it, it is easier to buy it in Russia and use it for its intended purpose,” he told potential buyers in India.
In February, Mikhailov said that the S-350 Vityaz, another Russian-developed air defense system, would be cheaper than the American Patriot. Several units of the S-350 system entered the Russian armed forces in 2020, but are not yet ready for export.
Russia boasts an anti-aircraft system developed ten years ago
The Tor M2KM is a short-range air defense system designed specifically for export, based on the Tor M2E system introduced in 2007.
M2KM was first introduced in 2013 and development and testing was completed in 2015. Russia tried unsuccessfully to sell it to India. According to the Military Today website, at least two units were delivered to Armenia in 2019.
One of them was destroyed in 2020 by an Azerbaijani drone during the conflict that broke out that year between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Azerbaijan also used drones in the latest conflict between the two states, which erupted last fall.
Ignoring Mikhailov’s claims about the versatility of the Russian air defense system, the M2KM system was primarily designed for use on 8×8 military trucks. But it can really be easily dismantled and installed on another platform, a well-trained team can do it within 10 minutes.
The system uses 9M331D missiles with a maximum range of 15 kilometers and can reach an altitude of up to 10 kilometers, with Russia claiming they can be launched within just 5 seconds of target detection and can destroy 90% of them, according to their data. nature
The M2KM has an arsenal of 8 missiles that have been designed to engage a wide range of targets, from aircraft and helicopters to drones and missiles.
A typical battery consists of 4 combat vehicles, 4 transfer vehicles and one command vehicle.
