Maia Sandu says she will not run for any political office in Romania in the next elections.
“I want to be very clear: I am not applying for any position in Romania. I know that on the other side of the Prut there are Romanians who follow what we do in Chisinau, and some of them appreciate what we do in Chisinau. We are very grateful. We have several important tasks here,” said the President of the Republic of Moldova on TVR, answering a question about the widespread scenario that she will run for the post of President of Romania.
When asked to comment on the statements of Marcel Colacu, who did not rule out the possibility of such a candidacy supported by PSD and PNL, Maia Sandu insisted: “I want to repeat: I am not running for any position in Romania. But we need the support of all political parties in Romania to succeed here in the Republic of Moldova.”
On January 16, Marcel Çolaku said he was a supporter of Maia Sandu and the Greater Romania Union when asked if the PSD and PNL would support her candidacy in the 2024 Romanian presidential election, News.ro reported. He also noted that there was no discussion between the parties to support a joint presidential candidate.
“Always bring the discussion to specific people. I would like to remind you that in 2024 there will also be presidential elections in the Republic of Moldova, and earlier than in Romania. I am one of the supporters of Maia Sandu and the unification of Greater Romania,” Marcel Ciolacu said, answering RTV’s question on Monday about the possible support of the PSD and PNL for the candidacy of the current president of the Republic of Moldova and for the presidential elections in Romania in 2024.
When asked if there is any law that prohibits Maia Sandu from participating in the presidential elections in Romania and the Republic of Moldova, the PSD leader replied: “You must have dual citizenship. In Romania, there are also candidates who have or may have dual citizenship.”
“We have a security crisis in the region and we have to be very attentive to the whole context. One is what we want or think is right, and the other is reality. This is a working script. No one can stop Ms. Maya Sanda. I support Ms. Maia Sanda as much as I can in an even more difficult period that the Republic of Moldova is going through, but we are also part of different political families,” Colacu added.
