Russia: Students Forced to Sign Consent for Early Conscription

In Russia, military registration and enlistment offices, in cooperation with school authorities, are forcing some students to sign an application for accepting early conscription, the Nestka website reports, citing the School of Lotteries, a human rights organization for recruits.

“Eighteen-year-old boys are being brainwashed, who, of course, do not understand the legal consequences of such statements. Under various pretexts, with the help of persuasion and threats, they are forced to sign statements,” complains Aleksey Tabalov, head of the human rights organization.

He clarified that such incidents are recorded in regions throughout Russia. According to Tambalov, military registration and enlistment offices negotiate with the leadership of educational institutions so that those students who signed the relevant declarations take exams earlier and then receive a gender course.

“The military registration and enlistment offices want to start inviting these students for a report from April 1 (…), and not wait for the summer and the end of the training period,” Tabalov said.

The Nestka website clarifies that the agreement on early conscription is easily cancelled. To do this, you must submit an application for the annulment of the previous application to the local military registration and enlistment office, the district military registration and enlistment office and the military prosecutor’s office.

“You have to state that you were misled, that you were convinced by officials, and that you did not know about the legal consequences of this statement,” Tambalov explains.

Meanwhile, the State Duma approved in the first reading a bill providing for an allowance for applicants who served in the army with additional points for higher education. The explanatory note to the document states that this initiative will encourage citizens called up for military service to receive and study at colleges and universities.
