USA: “The image of Dendias – Tsavusoglu is touching” – Agenda of Blinken’s visit to Greece

Defense and Energy Security Cooperation and Joint Commitment USA and Greece to defend democracy is expected to be at the center of the upcoming visit of the US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, in our country. Mr. Blinken will take the tour starting at Germanywill continue Turkey and will be completed in Greece.

The head of US diplomacy will arrive in Athens on the afternoon of February 20, where he will meet with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. On Tuesday, the US minister will hold a bilateral meeting with his counterpart Nikos Dendias.

The two ministers will open the Fourth US-Greece Strategic Dialogue, followed by joint statements (available to the press). Anthony Blinken will also meet on Tuesday with former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

At the press conference, US Deputy Secretary of State for European Affairs Karen Donfried estimated that all current geopolitical events would be discussed during Mr. Blinken’s contacts in our country.

“I cannot tell you exactly what the minister will discuss with his colleagues in Greece, but I can assume that the process of joining the Western Balkans will be a problem. I think many issues on the broader agenda, such as Ukraine and Russia, will certainly be on the table, as certainly were the earthquakes in neighboring Turkey and Syria last week. Therefore, I think that there are many issues that the minister will discuss with our Greek allies,” Donfried said.

In addition, the US Secretary of State acknowledged Greece’s regional role as a key member of NATO and the EU in advancing the Euro-Atlantic perspective of the Western Balkans. As he mentioned, “of course, Greece is our valuable NATO ally. It is also a key member of the European Union. And we have seen Greece play a consistent role in supporting European Union enlargement in the Balkans. And in this case, Greece has certainly been a key supporter of North Macedonia and other countries of the Western Balkans in terms of their Euro-Atlantic future and their entry into the European Union.”
