US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said on Wednesday that the United States has “growing concerns” about the partnership between China and Russia and China’s support for Russia in the war in Ukraine, CNN reported.
“My assessment is this: The PRC (People’s Republic of China) is trying to strengthen its authority in the international community by saying that it is ready to mediate and help stop this terrible invasion. And at the same time, they are committed to their seamless partnership with Russia,” Sherman said at an event at the Brookings Institution.
“And we certainly have concerns and growing concerns about this partnership and China’s support for this invasion.”
She said China was trying to “have both.” She also expressed concern about Russia’s partnership with Iran and North Korea.
“Ukrainians will give Putin a strategic blow. And it will create a lot of problems for those who support this unholy invasion in the future,” she said.
China is supplying the technology Moscow’s military needs to continue the Kremlin’s war in Ukraine despite international sanctions and export controls, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of Russian customs data.
Customs records show that China’s state-owned defense companies ship navigation equipment, radar jamming technology and fighter jet parts to sanctioned Russian state-owned defense companies.
