At least three people have died and five more have been injured in fires previously reported at two locations on the East Lansing Township campus, the Michigan State Police in the United States said on Monday evening.
Michigan State University’s University Police tweeted about the “injuries” and urged students and staff to “take cover where you are” as a heavy police force was deployed.
The shots were fired at two locations on campus, near the Berkeley Hall building and the IM East gym.
The East Lansing area, home to several colleges near the state capital Lansing, tweeted that the gunman had not been arrested and was on foot.
Police said there was an armed shooter who is now dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His identity and motives are being investigated, a spokesman said at a press conference.
Up to 50,000 students attend MSU State University, especially the East Lansing campus.
