New award for women writers
Britain has just launched a new award for women writers, the Women’s Award for Non-Fiction. Seven years after the introduction of the Women’s Prize for Fiction, a new study has found that women writers of non-fiction are less likely to be awarded for their work than their male counterparts. The award will be awarded annually and will be open to all women writers from around the world as long as their books are published in the UK and written in English. The winner will receive £30,000 and a statuette named “Charlotte” as the award is presented by the Charlotte Aitken Trust, a charity set up by former literary agent Gillon Aiken in memory of his late daughter.

At the age of 86, Peruvian writer and Nobel laureate (2010) Mario Vargas-Llosa was elected a member of the highly selective Académie française. The Académie française, founded in 1635, has in the past accepted members from other countries (only two), but Llosa is the only one who did not write in French, although he worked in the Spanish office of Agence France as a young man. -Click.
