Nektarios Santorinios: Last Party Farewell

The loss of Nektarios Santorini filled the political world and the parliament with sadness, which a few days ago mourned the death of Manousos Volodakis. Originally from Symi, Nektarios Santorinios was born in Rhodes in 1972. He studied chemical engineering at NTUA and gained many years of experience in this field. He served on the left at the forefront of trade unionism and local government before being first elected as a Dodecanese Member of Parliament for SYRIZA in 2015. . In the 2019 elections, he was re-elected as a Member of Parliament and appointed Head of the SYRIZA Shipping Department.

Nektarios Santorinios has always emphasized that we are fighting against cancer. Alexis Tsipras said of his loss: “Words are useless when it comes to saying goodbye to one of your own who leaves so early. Nektarios Santorinios was one of the most effective ministers of shipping. But above all, he was a rare man. The loss is great for all of us.”

SYRIZA MP Nektarios Santorinios has died – “Words are not needed when you need to say goodbye to one of your people,” Tsipras said in a statement.

The Prime Minister stressed in his post: “I was saddened to learn of the loss of SYRIZA MP Nektarios Santorini. A politician who honorably served his country, his faction and public life, especially in the field of island politics.” Nikos Androulakis also expressed his condolences to his family and comrades in Kumundura, stating that “Nektarios Santorinios blazed the political path with ethics and dignity.”

The official opposition suspended all party events and meetings for three days. They emphasize that politics for Nectarios Santorinios was a means not to win positions, but to get the job done and leave it. He associated his name with the island policy pursued by the government of SYRIZA, and especially with the Transport Equivalent, a permanent measure which in practice recognizes the isolation of the islands, as he used to state. His funeral will take place tomorrow Wednesday in Rhodes.
