She called them unreliable, contradictory and incorrect. Prosecutor of the Special Court Olga Smyrlis testimonies of three prosecutors who denounced him Dimitris Papagelopoulos for interfering in their work, suggesting the dismissal of the former minister on charges of dereliction of duty, at the same time he proposed the dismissal of the prosecutor Eleni Tulupaki who is on trial for the crime of abuse of power.
According to the prosecutor of the Special Court, complaints against Papagelopoulos by three prosecutors (Georgia Zatani, Eleni Raikou and Panayoti Athanasiou) were not supported by other evidence. In particular, the prosecutor, during her lengthy – more than five hours – trial, focused on deconstructing the testimony of three prosecutors against Papagelopoulos, insisting that what they said was unreliable, as she claimed. With respect to Georgia Zatani, who initially (since 2016) accused Papagelopoulos of interfering with her case against the businessman Vgenopoulos, the Special Court prosecutor attributed to her misjudgmental manipulations, which she described as “perversion”.
Regarding the relevant complaints of the former head of the Economic Prosecutor’s Office, Prosecutor P. Athanasiou against a series of interventions by Papagelopoulos (tax audits against G. Alafuzu, the owner of the SKAI TV channel, the case of Vgenopoulos and a complaint about the impeachment without evidence of journalist G. Papachristou, the case of M. Salla, etc.) , Ms. Smirley attributed selfish motives to the witness, saying, among other things, that “she sympathized with Papagelopoulos because she believed that he had not helped him extend his term in the Financial Prosecutor’s Office.” The prosecutor of the Special Court also attributed unreliability in the denunciations to P. Afanasiou, and referring to the fabrication of information about the journalist of the Ta Nea newspaper, she emphasized that this was impossible.
According to the complaint of the former head of the Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, El. Raikou said that Papagelopoulos interfered with her work to involve politicians in the Novartis investigation, the Special Court prosecutor called her “unreliable” and that this was an afterthought.
Finally, Ms. Smirli offered to acquit Tulupaki for not sending the KINAL reports on P. Kurumplis and An. Xantose (for drug billing) to Parliament because she claimed that a separate case had not been registered. Under this part of the charge, which is being prosecuted as a criminal offence, Ms. Smirley also offered to acquit Papagelopoulos, who is being tried as the moral criminal Eleni Toulupakis.
After completion of the prosecutor’s proposal, the court’s decision is expected no later than the end of the month.
