her hundredth ultramarathon concluded the woman from her Chelmsford Great Britainrunning to raise money for an organization that helped her husband when he was diagnosed with cancer.
April Hammett, 50, has raised £4,000 in her latest Essex 50K, which she will donate to the MacMillan charity.
As she admits, she started running after giving birth, as she gained weight. “It’s all about the decision…and I love medals,” she said.
The 50-year-old usually takes part in much longer ultramarathons, such as the 233km Grand Union Canal. However, he called the last 50 km “an enjoyable race”.
“After the birth of my last child, I gained a lot of weight, so I had to do something as my health deteriorated. I would either go on a diet – and I love food so that wouldn’t happen – or start exercising, and that’s how I ran my first marathon in 2002,” she explains.
She admits that she loves nature and change of scenery, but warns that “while you must be fully prepared physically, the same must be true mentally.”
“If it works,” she says, pointing to her head, “I always say that the legs will work too,” she notes.
Her husband Guy, who beat cancer just before Christmas, called his wife’s 100th ultramarathon a “fantastic achievement.”
However, he called it “annoying” that April doesn’t even work out and just runs.
