A man driving a U-Haul truck in the New York borough of Brooklyn injured eight people before police took him into custody, the city’s police commissioner said Monday. Two people are in serious condition.
One officer was among the wounded, Police Commissioner Kychant Sewell said at a news conference Monday afternoon.
Shortly after the arrest, Justin Brennan, the city councilman who represents the area, told NY1 the incident was “clearly intentional.”

“This driver knew what he was doing, he knew he was hitting people,” Brannan said, adding that when the driver was pulled over, he told police, “I want to die.”
The incident came on the same day that a federal jury began deliberating whether to seek the death penalty against Sayfullo Saipov, the extremist who drove a truck into a New York City bike lane in 2017, killing eight people.
Police do not suspect any connection.
The police do not take into account the possibility of terrorism.
