City radars: here is the surprising reason for the postponement of their placement News from Auto Plus in your smartphone News from Auto Plus in your inbox

As we know, the government intends to deploy many new radars in the coming months. Of course, the reason given is the improvement of road safety and the fight against accidents, in particular, related to speed. The interdepartmental organization does not stop reminding everyone that speeding is not only a provoking factor, but also complicates traffic accidents, which often end fatally. But radars also bring a lot to the state, hence its ambition to deploy as many of them as possible across France, not just on high-risk roads.

New weapon

In its “roadmap” released a few weeks earlier, the government announced the deployment of new radars, especially in cities. These are the famous city radars, a kind of mini-turrets, capable of analyzing and verbalizing numerous offenses, such as using the phone while driving, not observing the speed limit and running a red light, as well as what crossing the solid line, among others. In total, at least 300 cabins were to be installed throughout France by 2023. But there is a small change in the program.

Deployment is paused

Indeed, as France Info explains, “ the commissioning of new urban speed cameras, planned for the end of March in several cities in France, has been postponed indefinitely“. If some cabins are already installed on Toulouse, Marseille, Montbéliard or Montpellier, they are in the testing phase and should remain so. But what is the reason for this break? According to the League Against Road Violence, this is explained by the pension reform, which “paralyzes” political decision-making.
