Attempts to find two Greeks among the ruins of an apartment building in Antioch continue. The EMAK Greek mission is expected to submit an exceptional request to re-search the site today.
It is about a Greek couple, aged 65 and 62, with dual citizenship, who lived in an apartment building that collapsed in Antioch, Turkey, after a devastating earthquake.
Yesterday, members of the Greek rescue team with a rescue dog searched an apartment building where two Greek expatriates lived.
The area was also checked by other rescue teams.
“Last night, I contacted the son-in-law of the two missing Greeks. He showed us the place, and the following actions were taken: late at night, the EMAK team left with a rescue dog and headed to the center of Hatay. I remind you that the Greek mission is working further south than the two missing Greeks. We left, deviating from the protocols, went with a rescue dog into a six-story building, where there were two apartments on each floor,” Mr. Artofios emphasized.
The representative of the fire department stressed that the area was checked by other rescue teams, as there are marking points.
“We did a preliminary survey and a superficial survey. There are people trapped, but we have not found those who match our descriptions,” he added.
Mr. Artopios noted that today an exceptional request will be submitted to the Greek EMAK to visit the scene and conduct an in-depth investigation in order to find the missing persons.
Nephew of the missing: yesterday a man was pulled out of the rubble alive
At the same time, the nephew of the missing Bassel Menune called for the search to continue in the apartment building where his relatives lived, saying that a living man was pulled out from under the rubble of their house yesterday.
“On the first day of the earthquake, their son-in-law took the Greek embassy and said that we have Greeks stuck under the ruins in Antioch. And then we waited to get some kind of response to get updates. Since then, several teams have come.
Local teams were looking for. Three, four neighbors were carried out alive on the first day. Yesterday another neighbor was taken out. He was alive too. And now we are waiting for help to see what will happen to my uncle,” Menune said.
He noted that the last 10 years the couple lived in Antioch, and were born and raised abroad.
“I was in contact with them 20 days ago, and after the earthquake, their daughter was never able to contact them. I also tried to call on the same day, after the earthquake, but no one answered,” he said.
