What was imagined as a lightning strike became a war of attrition, unleashed by a great imperialist power, or rather a colonialist one, against a country, a nation and a culture that it wants to enslave, humiliate, destroy. I’m not suggesting offensive Manichaeism here, but I’m avoiding what I would call a hypertrophy of “nuances.” It is difficult for me not to notice behind “equidistantism”, “pacifism” and “neutralism” the cowardice that tries to remove from Putin’s Russia the responsibility for the aggression that began on February 24, 2022. a military, psychological and moral war in which the vision of human dignity is irreconcilable.

Putin bet on breaking the unity of the democratic West. For him, Euro-Atlantic values ​​are a word in the wind, a fairy tale, a chimera. He knew how to take Angela Merkel by the nose, he thought that he would cause problems in the future. He did not foresee at all: (1) the will of Ukrainians, military power and heroic energy of resistance (Azovstal, Kherson, Bakhmut, Kyiv, Odesa), (2) the rapprochement of national feeling radicalized by the invasion and the civic courage of President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and his team, (3) the moral mobilization of the EU and NATO has been transformed into military solidarity and an effective policy with Ukraine as long as it is necessary, as emphasized by Joe Biden in Warsaw, (4) the ability of the leaders of NATO and the EU to overcome their natural differences in the struggle for a common goal: the victory of Ukraine and the defeat of Russia . In other words: the victory of democracy and the defeat of militarist, imperialist, expansionist autocracy.

All these elements explain the fact that, a year after the beginning of the criminal aggression, Putin is an outcast of the international community, and Ukraine continues to enjoy the admiration of those who love freedom and reject slavery. Totalitarianism means, as we know from Hannah Arendt, the elimination of moral and legal personality. The Russian-Ukrainian war is totalitarianism and democracy.
