Migration: a shipwreck on the island of Lesbos with five dead

Five more migrants were added early yesterday morning to the long list of those who died trying to leave Turkey by sea for its islands. East Aegean And Italy. They were on an inflatable boat that sank early yesterday morning off the east coast of Lesvos. Another nine people were considered missing until yesterday. A new shipwreck with migrants was the second in 24 hours, as an inflatable boat with migrants sank off the coast of Leros at 7 am on Monday. Four children, the oldest 4 years old, died of hypothermia, two more were missing.

The inflatable boat that sank early yesterday morning in the water area of Khobotok sailed from Ayvali from Turkey. Migrants (from Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea, etc.) were first taken to the coast, hidden in trucks, and then, at the direction of traffickers, 41 people were loaded onto a boat with a capacity of about 10 people. Despite the bad weather, none of them were wearing a life jacket. Despite the large waves and the influx of water, the migrants managed to reach coast of eastern Lesvosin a rocky place, however, where it was difficult to lie down.

Twenty-seven migrants were seen on land or picked up alive at sea, with nine more missing.

As they approached the shore, the boat capsized and everyone on it was thrown into the sea. A total of 27 people were found on land or rescued from the water. The father and his 6-year-old daughter were taken to the hospital with hypothermia, while the rest were taken to the island facility. The Coast Guard recovered two dead women and a man from the sea, and eyewitnesses reported the existence of two more bodies, which, however, until the time of this writing, were not recovered due to adverse weather conditions. As of last night, there were 41 people on board, with nine more migrants missing. A woman and two children who were on an inflatable boat that sank early Monday morning off the coast of southeastern Leros were, at least formally, considered missing. The ship sailed at night from the Didim region off the coast of Turkey and sank close to the coast. Three Congolese children aged four, two and one, as well as a one-month-old infant from Nigeria, died of hypothermia in the island’s hospital, and a woman of African descent was also dragged from the sea dead.

And in this case, the immigrants were from Africa. They were taken to the Turkish coast from Izmir, hidden in a truck, and set sail, despite the bad weather. Coast Guard officials do not link the two crashes or speak of heightened immigration pressure. However, they consider it possible that some slave trade networks are deliberately sending migrants to the islands of the eastern Aegean in the midst of bad weather, hoping that poor weather conditions will limit Coast Guard patrols.
