The landscape around the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine offers it natural protection that makes it an “impregnable fortress,” the commander of Ukraine’s ground forces said Monday, as quoted by CNN and News.ro.
“This particular land has topographic features. The city is surrounded by prevailing heights and hills, which in itself is a problem for the enemy,” said the commander of the Ground Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Colonel-General Oleksandr Sirskyi.
“The army’s barricade system, along with the natural landscape, turned this area into an impregnable fortress where thousands of the enemy died,” Sirski said.
“We are using all opportunities, both engineering and natural, to destroy the enemy’s best units. The battle continues,” the general assures.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi said at a joint press conference with the Ukrainian leadership on Friday that no one will surrender in Bakhmut. However, he said on Saturday that the situation at the front here is becoming more and more difficult.
“We will fight as long as we can,” he promised.
The head of the Russian private military company “Wagner” Yevgeny Prigozhin said on Sunday that the fighting for Bakhmut continues, and there are no signs of withdrawal of the Ukrainian armed forces.
Fight to the last,” he said in Telegram, referring to the Ukrainian soldiers.
On Monday, mercenary commander Wagner released a video of himself in the cockpit of a Su-24 bomber, claiming to have participated in the bombing of Ukrainian positions in Bakhmut.
