Rishi Sunak’s allies called Liz Truss “delusional” and warned that further meddling would cost the Tories the next election after she strongly defended her tax-cutting agenda.
The former prime minister sparked another Tory civil war by saying she was never given a “real chance” to realize her radical plans.
Breaking her silence on her disastrous 49 days in office in a 4,000-word article for the Telegraph, Truss blamed “a very powerful financial establishment” and indirectly criticized Sunak for raising taxes as finance minister.
He wrote that the corporate tax increase from 19% to 25% was “counterproductive” and hurt investment in the UK and “citizens’ wages”.
Downing Street declined to comment, but there are fears that her return to the political fray will boost Tory votes calling for Jeremy Hunt, the current Chancellor of the Exchequer, to reverse his refusal to announce tax cuts next month.
Truss will give his first Spectator interview this week and support upcoming tax cuts from the Conservative Growth Group, which was formed last month and already has 50 Conservative MPs.
However, Truss was denounced by several Conservative MPs for fomenting dissension within Tory ranks after the previous year’s infighting.
An ally of the prime minister, he said, “The more (Tras) talks, the harder it becomes to win elections.”
