This measure was announced by Piret Tinkus, the head of the bans and restrictions service of the Estonian Tax and Customs Administration.

“From February 6, the purchase, import and transportation of oil products, if they come from Russia, is prohibited,” she said.

“The list of prohibited goods also includes fuel for cars. According to estimates, today, when crossing the border with Estonia for the first time, about 80% of cars, in addition to a full fuel tank, have a container with ten liters of gasoline,” Tinkus added.

She noted that a resident of the European Union has the right to buy fuel in Russia, if it is necessary to complete the trip and return to the EU bloc.

Estonia emphasizes that people with Russian gasoline in canisters are not allowed across the border

“Fuel bought in Russia in canisters is prohibited from being imported into the EU, as it is not considered to meet basic needs such as completing a journey,” an Estonian official said.

Tinkus also noted that such a ban applies equally in the Baltic countries and Finland.

She also stated that manually emptying the tank immediately after crossing Finland and then refueling in Russia can be considered a violation of the law, regardless of whether Russian gasoline is sold or for personal use.

According to the Estonian official, emptying the tank is allowed only for the purpose of repairing the car and if the petrol is pumped back later.

The move, announced by Estonia, comes after an EU embargo on imports of Russian oil products by sea came into force on Sunday.

This measure was agreed upon by the member states of the European Union in June of last year.
