German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in an interview with Bild am Sonntag that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky agreed that weapons supplied by the West will not be used to attack Russian territory, The Guardian reports.

“There is a consensus on this,” Scholz said in an interview with the Bild am Sonntag weekly.

Ukraine’s Western allies have promised to arm it with high-precision missiles and missile systems, as well as tanks, to push back Russian forces in the country’s east.

Russian President Vladimir Putin compared the intervention of countries such as Germany to his nation’s struggle during World War II.

But Scholz rejected the comparison.

“(Putin’s) words are part of a series of absurd historical comparisons he uses to justify his attack on Ukraine,” he said. “But nothing justifies this war.”

“Together with our allies, we provide Ukraine with battle tanks so that it can defend itself. We carefully weighed each arms shipment in close coordination with our allies, starting with America.”

Scholz said this consensus-based approach “avoids escalation.”

Putin “didn’t threaten me or Germany”

In an interview with Bild am Sonntag, Olaf Scholz said that Vladimir Putin “did not threaten me or Germany” in his phone conversations with the Russian president.

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, speaking for a BBC documentary earlier this week, said the Russian leader had threatened him with a missile strike that would “only last a minute”. The Kremlin said Johnson was lying.

The German chancellor noted that it was clear from the conversations he had with Putin that they had very different views on the war in Ukraine, which Russia calls a “special military operation.”

“I explained very clearly to Putin that Russia bears full responsibility for the war,” Scholz said.

“Russia invaded its neighbor for no reason in order to take part of Ukraine or the whole country under its control.”

Because Germany considers Russia’s actions to violate the European peace framework, it has offered financial, humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine, he said. (source: news.ro)
