Hyke Hagi turned 58 on Sunday, the birthday of the former captain of the tricolor Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar.
Born on February 5, 1965 in Sechele, Hagi scored 223 appearances and 141 goals in the country’s first football division.
He won three league titles and three Romanian Cups. Gheorghe Hagi became Romania’s top scorer twice, in the 1984/1985 and 1985/1986 seasons.
During his time in Spain, Hagi played for Real Madrid (1990-1992, 19 goals in 64 matches) and Barcelona (1994-1996, 7 goals in 36 matches). Between Madrid and Barcelona, Hagi played for Brescia (1992-1994).
From 1996 to 2001, Hagi played for Istanbul’s Galatasaray, with whom he won four league titles and two Turkish Cups, the UEFA Cup and the European Super Cup.
Hagi participated in three European Championships (1984, 1996 and 2000) and three World Championships (1990, 1994 and 1998). At the end of 1999, he was recognized as the Romanian footballer of the century.
Immediately after the end of his career, Hagi became the coach of the Romanian national team in 2001. In 2003, he became a technician of the Turkish team “Bursaspor”, and in the 2004-2005 season he was on the technical bench of “Galatasaray” Istanbul.
In 2006, he returned to Romania, to “Poli Timisoara”, but after a short time he left here as well. After a one-year break, Hagi took charge of Steaua, but the mandate lasted less than three months, during which he qualified the team for the Champions League groups. In October 2010, Hagi began his second term at Galatasaray, where he stayed until March 25, 2011.
Between September 2014 and August 1, 2020, Gheorghe Haghi was the head coach of FC Viitorul Constanţa’s main team.
As of August 2020, Hagi announced that he will continue to stay at the Gheorghe Hagi Football Academy, where he will coordinate the technical concept of the children’s and youth center together with the technical director.
In 2017, FC Viitorul won the Romanian championship title.
In 2021, he resigned from the post of Romanian coach, preferring to remain the coach and owner of Farul Constanta.
Gheorghe Hagi is married to Marilena and has two children: Kira, who is an actress, and Janis, who plays for Glasgow Rangers, News.ro reports.
