The northeastern United States and eastern Canada are experiencing a cold weekend, with temperatures in some areas setting below-zero records.
In Mount Washington, New Hampshire, the perceived temperature (i.e. the feeling of body temperature, which may differ from the actual temperature and depends on various factors such as humidity and wind speed) dropped to -78°C overnight on Friday , reported by the National Weather Service (NWS).
According to the Weather Channel website, the previous record high was -74°C.
In New York, where the temperature in Central Park was -16°C, homeless shelters were ordered not to deny anyone entry.
In Boston, schools have been closed since Friday as a precaution.
In the state of Maine, the local weather service said that in the town of Friendsville, near the Canadian border, the temperature reached -51°C.
At Montreal International Airport early in the morning the thermometer showed -29 degrees Celsius. In Quebec and many parts of eastern Canada, temperatures were around -40 or even -50 degrees Celsius.
Due to extreme conditions, the start of the Quebec Carnival has been canceled as while participants are used to the cold, the icy air can cause frostbite in minutes.
However, meteorologists predict that conditions will begin to improve from tomorrow Sunday.
