Czech Republic – Slovakia: Thousands of houses were left without electricity due to a blizzard

Storm winds and snowstorms in the Czech Republic today left thousands of homes without electricity and blocked the main highway linking the country with neighboring Slovakia.

In the Žilina region of Slovakia, authorities have urged residents to stay at home and avoid unnecessary travel, especially to the north. Winds blow at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour in the Tatras.

A section of the D1 highway near the Tatras was closed for several hours after about 30 vehicles were involved in a traffic accident due to a heavy snowstorm, according to local MME.

In the Czech Republic, about 15,000 households remain without electricity out of about 90,000 that were left without electricity this morning after hurricane winds knocked down trees and power lines.

The ChTK news agency reported that dozens of train routes had been cancelled.
