A series of avalanches have killed three people in Austria’s tourist resort since Friday at the height of the season, with authorities warning of risks from particularly unstable snowpack, AFP reports.
“A winter sports enthusiast died in an avalanche on Saturday in Kaltenbach,” a Tyrolean police spokesman told AFP, declining to provide details on the circumstances of the accident.
As reported by the Austrian news agency APA, this is a 17-year-old New Zealander who was outside the bounds of a ski slope.
On Friday, a 32-year-old Chinese man died after going down a slope during an avalanche in the resort of Sölden.
On Saturday morning, another skier who went missing a day before the lifts were to be closed was found dead in the snow in the Vorarlberg region, police said, as quoted by AFP.
According to the Austrian APA agency, he was about 50 years old, and he died on the slopes of Kleinwalsertal, on the border with Germany.
Heavy snow and wind have increased the avalanche danger in Tyrol and Vorarlberg over the past two days.
According to the authorities, the danger level of 4 on a five-point scale did not prevent many tourists from going off the beaten track.
