According to a network of 53 weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr, continuously operating from 2010 until today, the average monthly maximum temperature in January 2023 was the highest in the last 14 years in most of the country.

The map shows the deviations of the average maximum temperature in January 2023 by geographical departments, based on the average value for the period 2010-2019.

The following graph shows the ranking of January by year according to the average monthly maximum temperature. The ranking shows that this year’s January was the warmest since at least 2010 in Northern Greece, Thessaly, the Peloponnese and the Aegean Islands (except Crete). In the rest of the regions, it ranks as the 2nd warmest after 2014 in Western Greece and after 2021 in Central Greece and Crete.

Especially hot days in Northern Greece and Thessaly

Northern Greece and Thessaly recorded the most days with positive temperature deviations. In Macrohori Veria, 29 out of 31 days of the month were warmer than the average for the period 2010-2019, while Trikala and Dion recorded 28 days of positive deviations. Athens had a monthly average maximum deviation of +1.8°С, with 25 days warmer than the seasonal norm, while Thessaloniki recorded the warmest January since 2010, with a positive deviation of +3.6°С and 24 days positive temperature. temperature fluctuations.
