Euro NCAP has just released its 2022 by the Numbers review, which summarizes the highlights as well as new trends that have emerged over the past year. 2022 will remain a record year, as the number of safety crash tests and new models has increased.

Indeed, Euro NCAP published the total last year 73 security assessmentsincluding 67 for new car models, including 65 models with standard safety equipment and 2 with additional safety equipment, as well as 6 for variants of models already tested previously.

Euro NCAP crash tests: figures for 2022

2022 was a challenging year for the automotive industry, marked by new safety, emissions and cybersecurity regulations, as well as shortages of semiconductors, materials and labor.

It is in this context that Euro NCAP decided to postpone the introduction of its own new test protocols until the beginning of 2023. The latest models tested achieved very good results, with 15 out of 65 vehicles receiving a four-star rating (22%), while 50 vehicles received a five-star rating (78%). Unlike in 2021, no car received three stars or less.

Euro NCAP crash tests: trends for 2022

In 2022, Euro NCAP marks the appearance new trendshow’offensive of Asian manufacturers : Indeed, 7 new brands appeared at Euro NCAP last year, 6 of which are Chinese. Many new players have entered the European market, largely due to the growing popularity of electric vehicles.

As last year, in market of electric vehicles continues to grow rapidly. In 2022, 22 out of 65 new models (or 34%) were 100% electric vehicles, and 5 out of 6 Euro NCAP Best in Class winners were electric.

Euro NCAP crash tests: new safety systems

The driver assistance systems are increasingly common in cars: in 2022, 94% of vehicles assessed by Euro NCAP were equipped with a system to detect driver drowsiness. In 53 of the 61 vehicles, the system monitors steering wheel activity or the vehicle’s lane position, while in 9 vehicles, monitoring is done through direct driver eye tracking or a combination of the two systems. .

Among the new safety systems that have recently appeared, center airbags help reduce injuries between the two front passengers in side collisions. Of the 65 new cars tested, 47 (or 72%) were standardcentral airbags for the front seats.
