The search for his captain continues for the second day Phantom Air Force, which crashed yesterday in the area of Katakolo, Ilia.
Two divers from the Mobile Underwater and Marine Structures Maintenance Group (MOGMS) of the 206th Infrastructure Squadron and three divers from the 31st Search and Rescue Squadron are working in the area.
Divers work in a Coast Guard lifeboat with an underwater robot capable of diving to depths of up to 100 meters.
In addition, in addition to the C-70 Navy helicopter and Super Puma, which also operate in the evening hours, an Agusta Bell helicopter joined the search from early in the morning.
An F-4 of 338 Squadron took off from the 117th Fighter Wing at Andravida as part of a training flight paired with another aircraft of the same type. A pair of F-4s were cruising at low altitude 300 feet over Cypress Bay when one crashed at 10:30. Immediately, the airborne aircraft began to move over the crash site, only to be quickly located by forces that rushed to search and rescue.
In practice, the forces that launched an operation to search for the wreckage of the Phantom, which was located less than two and a half hours later, were at the crash site in a matter of minutes.
The two operators of the second Phantom have full knowledge of the accident and their testimony will be useful in establishing the cause of the crash for the investigation to be conducted.
Although it is still too early to draw any conclusions about the crash, initial reports suggest that the pilots did not have time to use their ejection seats and report a possible problem by radio.
After yesterday’s crash, the number of Phantoms that have served reliably under the PA banner for the past 50 years has been reduced to 33.
