Dominant men
COMEDY (2022)
Creators: Alberto Caballero, Laura Caballero
InterpretationsNarrated by: Ochoa Hill, Fernando Gil

An entertaining but interesting comedy series on the Netflix platform came to us from Spain. Four close friends in their 40s face the modern reality of women’s awakening and neo-feminism that they struggle to adjust to. Each of them is at a different stage in their marital status, but they all have one thing in common: they are struggling to make ends meet with the women in their lives.

Successful television editor Pedro is suddenly fired, with a huge mortgage looming over his head, and his wife decides to become an influencer to contribute to the income. A divorced Sandy misses his ex and his teenage daughter sets him up on a Tinder date. Longtime married Louis has stopped dating his wife romantically, and single Raul feels ready for the next step, but his symbiote prefers an open relationship. Despite being prone to a flood of clichés and political correctness, the Netflix series is surprisingly insightful and genuinely funny, commenting on contemporary relationships between men and women. The latter, while eager to take on their new roles, seem almost as awkward here, often reenacting some of the most common sexist stereotypes themselves.

Window to the sea ★★★
DRAMA (2019)
Directed by: Miguel Angel Jimenez
InterpretationsCast: Emma Suarez, Akilas Karazisis, Antonis Kafetsopoulos

On the Ertflix platform, we choose a relatively recent co-production between Greece and other countries, which takes us on a journey through the wild landscape of Nisyros.

There, Spanish Maria (Emma Suarez), who has recently been diagnosed with cancer, arrives with her friends on a summer trip to the waters of the Aegean Sea.

A 55-year-old woman on the brink of depression will see life smile upon her when she finds love in the person of a local fisherman (Akilas Karazisis), and now she faces the difficult decision to return.

The Basque director draws inspiration from his personal experiences to create a moving film that seeks optimism even as everything darkens before the specter of death. Emma Suarez, for her part, excels by pairing her character’s psyche with the rugged beauty of an uncritical island, in a role that has also won awards at international festivals.
