Peru: President Boluarte calls for speedy elections

its president Peru Today, Friday, January 27, Dina Boluarte asked the country’s parliament to expedite the general elections for December 2023 in order to respond to one of the main demands of the protesters and lead the country out of the crisis.

We are submitting this bill to ministers to call elections for December 2023.said Boluarte herself, who took over as interim president after the ouster of President-elect Pedro Castillo in early December, an event that sparked violent protests across the country. At least 46 people have died in the protests so far.

When Bolluarte assumed her new duties, elections were expected to take place in 2026, when her predecessor’s term expired. But, to calm the souls, Boluarte proposed to speed up the parliamentary and presidential elections for April 2024. Parliament ratified the relevant bill, but, as she herself admitted today, mobilizations continue and “more blockages (roads) and violence.โ€

Many roads remain blocked and the country is already experiencing shortages and food prices have skyrocketed. Peru is paralyzed, and its “pearl”, the legendary Machu Picchu, a magnet for tourists, has closed its gates.

Demonstrations continue daily demanding the resignation of the president and the dissolution of parliament. Bolluarte ruled out resigning, saying she would remain interim president until elections were held.
