Roskomnadzor, Russia’s media and news watchdog, announced on Friday that it had blocked access to FBI and CIA sites in Russia, Meduza reported.
The Moscow office of TASS reported that the websites of the Central Intelligence Agency and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation were blocked “for spreading fakes.”
Roskomnadzor also stated that it limited access “to a number of resources of state structures of warring countries due to the distribution of materials aimed at destabilizing the socio-political situation in the Russian Federation.”
The Russian state agency claims that the websites www.cia.gov and www.fbi.gov have published materials that “contain socially significant inaccurate information and also discredit the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.”
In November 2022, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine, CIA Director David Marlowe said that the agency intended to work with Russians who disagreed with the war, and that such individuals were wanted worldwide.
The financial daily The Wall Street Journal noted, citing former CIA employees, that the war created fertile ground for recruiting new agents from among the military, businessmen and anyone who left Russia after the start of the invasion of Ukraine.
Last March, less than a month after the war began, the Kremlin accused the CIA and FBI of trying to recruit employees of the Russian embassy in Washington.
The decision of the Roskomnadzor was made the day after the General Prosecutor’s Office of Russia added the independent news publication Meduza to the list of “undesirable” organizations in the country. The sanction is aimed at forcing the organization to dissolve, and its employees and donors face penalties up to and including prison terms.
In a statement about this decision, the Prosecutor General of Russia stated that the Latvian news publication “poses a threat to the foundations of the constitutional order and security of the Russian Federation.”
But Meduza has been de facto banned in Russia since March 4 last year, when Roskomnadzor blocked access to its website and also restricted access to the BBC, Deutsche Welle and Radio Free Europe.
