
Fewer than 800,000 cars were produced in the UK last year, the lowest figure since 1956. In 2019, 1.3 million cars were produced, and in 2016 – more than 1.7 million.
In 2021, 859 thousand cars were produced in Great Britain, and last year – 775 thousand cars. Several things mattered, including the closing of two plants, one in 2021 and the other in 2022.
Their number was so small because of the processor crisis, because of trade relations complicated by Brexit and because the UK, compared to EU countries, produces few electric and hybrid cars.
Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that production in 2022 was 41% lower than in 2019, the year before the pandemic.
Nissan produced 238,000 vehicles last year, while Jaguar Land Rover produced 203,000 vehicles.
Mini and Nissan Qashqai became the best-selling models. 80% of produced cars were exported. For many cars, the waiting time exceeds a year due to the component crisis.
