Morera was born a year after her parents immigrated to the US. Eight years later, the family returned, but the journey betrayed their hopes.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, her father died of pulmonary tuberculosis near the end of the transatlantic voyage, and she permanently lost hearing in one ear after a fall.
