ChatGPT has become an online sensation in recent months, but the CEO of OpenAI, the company that developed the chatbot, says that at its worst, artificial intelligence (AI) could end up “turning the lights out” for humanity, Business Insider and Fortune magazine reported .

Tech CEO Sam Altman spoke about the benefits and dangers of artificial intelligence during a recent episode of the StrictlyVC vlog hosted by Connie Loizos, a Silicon Valley tech journalist.

This asked Altman what would be the most optimistic and pessimistic scenarios for the development of artificial intelligence in more and more fields.

“I think the happiest scenario is so good it’s hard for me to even imagine it. I can imagine to some extent that we will have incredible abundance [de resurse] and systems that can help us solve bottlenecks and improve all aspects of reality and allow us all to live our best lives,” said OpenAI CEO.

But he noted that this ultra-optimistic scenario might actually be so good that only a “truly insane person” could speak about it with confidence.

But as for the pessimistic version, his thoughts are quite gloomy.

“At worst, and I think it’s important to say, it’s kind of an epiphany for all of us,” Altman said.

However, the CEO of OpenAI said that he is most concerned about the accidental short-term use of artificial intelligence, which can have dire consequences, rather than its general evolution in the future.

“So I think the importance of AI security and AI performance cannot be overstated. I would like a lot to happen,” he added.

Microsoft announced this month that it is in talks with OpenAI to invest in the company and integrate its ChatGPT chatbot into products like Word, Outlook and Powerpoint, after already investing $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019.

The cost of new investments will be 10 billion dollars.
