Investigators have detained a Ukrainian security official suspected of spying for Russia, authorities said Thursday as part of Kyiv’s efforts to root out traitors as the anniversary of the war with Russia approaches.
The official, a lieutenant colonel of the SBU, who joined the operation, revealed the location of military checkpoints and other “secret information”, the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) reported.
He allegedly sent the information to his Russian contacts via email and instant messaging. During the search, they found mobile phones, Russian SIM cards, cash and other evidence that he had “long-standing ties” with the Russian state and Russian law enforcement agencies, the SBI added.
“Today, the service works as one team and does everything for the victory of Ukraine,” said SBU head Vasyl Malyuk in a separate statement, stressing that the removal of traitors from the ranks of Ukrainian security “is an important part of the process. “
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi fired the former head of the Security Service of Ukraine, a childhood friend, in July of last year due to collusion with Russia by officials of the powerful agency.
