The operator JSC “Energy Company of Ukraine” (ECU) will develop an electricity supply project based on floating power plants with a capacity of 500 MW with the Turkish Karpowership, writes the press of the Republic of Moldova.
According to ECU, the companies, together with national and international organizations, intend to develop a project to finance and launch 500 MW of electricity installed on marine vessels.
This capacity can be enough to provide electricity to a million families in Ukraine, according to the Ukrainian company, which is also quoted by Yahoo News.
As part of the cooperation, options for placing energy vessels near the coasts of the Republic of Moldova and Romania, connecting them to their electrical networks and transferring current to the Ukrainian energy system through interstate power lines are being considered.
As such, Karpowership and ECU say they will negotiate with the Romanian and Moldovan authorities to implement the decision.
General Director of ECU Vitaliy Butenko reminded that Ukraine’s energy system has suffered 12 massive attacks from Russia, and the electricity deficit due to damage to Ukraine’s generation infrastructure is growing.

“While the war continues, building new power units to restore lost or damaged generating capacity is impossible, and we must find innovative solutions to overcome the current crisis. “Karpowership technology allows relatively quick deployment of new generating capacity to target Ukrainian We believe that this could lead to a paradigm shift in solving the energy crisis in Ukraine during Russian attacks on infrastructure,” said Vitaliy Butenko, according to the quoted source.
“Karpowership is pleased to partner with ECU to mitigate the energy crisis in Ukraine,” said Zeynep Kharezi, Commercial Director of Karpowership. “Energy ships are a fast, reliable and flexible solution to reduce the electricity deficit in the country, and we are ready to support Ukraine in obtaining the necessary energy as soon as possible,” said Zeynep Kharezi.
Konstantin Borosan, State Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, told Mold-Street.com that the decision was discussed as early as November 2022.
“There were discussions regarding such a decision, including the possibility of providing the Republic of Moldova with electricity if necessary,” Borosan said.
According to him, there will be certain technical and environmental limitations associated with the port of Giurgiulesti, which will require a number of investments.
Karpowership (owned by Karadeniz Energy Group) is one of the largest operators of floating power plants in the world. The company’s fleet includes 36 vessels with a capacity of 6 gigawatts.
Bringing and commissioning such a floating power plant will take up to 30 days, and the construction of a new power plant will take years.
Floating power plants operate on both fuel oil and natural gas/LNG.
