Members of Peru’s parliament submitted a proposed impeachment resolution to President Dean Bolluart on Wednesday, according to documents seen by Reuters.
A movement against the country’s first female president after just over a month in office cites Ms Bolluarte’s “permanent moral incompetence”.
The move to remove her comes amid violent protests following the impeachment and arrest of her predecessor, Pedro Castillo, last month, in which dozens of people were killed.
The petition, a copy of which was reviewed by Reuters, was signed by 28 pro-Castillo left-wing lawmakers. A minimum of 20% or 26 signatures was required to accept the proposal.
The proposal now needs to be approved by 52 votes for discussion in Congress, where it must win the support of two-thirds of Parliament.
“Never in the history of Peru has a government killed more than forty people in protests in such a short period of one month of rule,” the petition says, accusing Ms Boluarte, among other things, of allowing abuses and disproportionate use of force. . . .
The President’s Office accused Castillo, in custody, of fueling political polarization during his nearly 17 months in office.
On Tuesday Ms Boluarte called for a “political truce”. He also accused drug dealers and others of fueling violence in the streets.
Peru’s ombudsman’s office said more than 90 roadblocks were set up across the country on Wednesday and another person was killed in the city of Cusco.
At least 47 people have been killed in clashes since the protests began in December, including a police officer, and hundreds have been injured, according to the office.
Human rights organizations have accused police and soldiers of using excessive force, including using live ammunition and firing tear gas from helicopters.
Security forces say the protesters, mostly in Peru’s southern Andes, used homemade weapons and explosives.
