It would not be an exaggeration to say that this is an exhibition in which we are all “at home”. The tribute called “The Tenement House”, which has been presented in two rooms on the ground floor of the Greek American Association since the end of November, attracted thousands of visitors because the subject touched sensitive chords. We may love or hate a particular social Babylon, we may want to beautify it or wipe it off the face of the earth, however we feel that this is the place where we live and breathe. This is the “theatrical roof” of our daily life. And just as on its floors there is a symbiosis of residents of different social, cultural and geographical origins, so the exhibition brought together completely different categories of people: schoolchildren, the elderly, architects and urban planners, art lovers, inquisitive Athenians who wanted to learn more about the most popular building building in the city, which is about to turn 100 years old.

The day before yesterday, the President of the Republic also crossed the threshold of the Greek-American Union. The chairman of the board of directors, Leonidas-Foivos Koskos, was waiting at the entrance to greet her, and then the baton was taken over by two curators, “our” Nikos Vatopoulos and art critic Iris Kritikou. Katerina Sakellaropoulou stayed for an hour to look closely at paintings, sculptures, embroideries, photographs, fabrics, installations, videos, which make up a very interesting story about the history of urban housing. During the tour, he particularly focused on certain works, such as Giorgos Rorris’s painting of a woman with an open window behind her that overlooks the city. Having the technique of personal cultivation, the President knew the work of many artists and photographers who participated in the group exhibition. After the tour, Ms. Sakellaropoulou discussed with the President of the Hellenic American Association, CEO Vicky Branica and the curators the impressive impact of the exhibition. It is worth noting that the dedication is framed by many parallel events, such as lectures, round tables, educational walks around the city. Due to the great interest, the exhibition was extended until 25 February. Nikos Vatopoulos and Iris Kritikou mentioned the continuation of this joint venture, which will be an exhibition dedicated to the Athenian Naples, which will take place in December. This area, which also contains the Union, was for many years the spiritual center and hinterland of the Athenian trilogy. Later there will also be a tribute to the Greek American Association itself, not only as a building and landmark in the heart of Athens, but as an organization at the forefront of education and culture.
