Olympiacos secured their way to the semi-finals of the Greek Cup.
The Red-Whites beat Aris 1-0 in Kleanthi Vikelidis as well, after winning with the same score in Piraeus, they qualified for the 4th tournament, where they will face AEK.
The big star of Mitchell Gonzalez’s team was Konstantinos Tsolakis, who made many interventions, the most striking of which was Andre Gray’s penalty in the 84th minute.
The Jamaican striker proved fatal for Alan Pardew’s team, who tried hard despite the omissions but left impressed.
After receiving support from the “quirkiness” of the crowd, Aris resolutely entered the match. In fact, in the first few seconds, Peter Etembo forced Tsolakis into the corner with a hard shot.
Gray’s individual effort in the 4th minute resulted in an anemic shot as the Jamaican striker was pressured by two opponents in his last shot. Minutes passed, Olympiacos stepped up their game.
In fact, Mathieu Valbuena forced Chulias Cuestas into an impressive intervention in the 20th minute with a forward shot, and seven minutes later a Giorgos Masouras shot from Bradley Maziku cleared the ball before it crossed the line.
The game continued at a great pace, with the goalkeepers playing a leading role. Tsolakis, in particular, saved his goal twice against his opponent Grey, first in a 4-on-4 game in the 34th minute – the Jamaican was in the lateral position, who had fielded Andreas Doi earlier – and then in the delays of the first half, spreading his right foot to close range to the former Watford striker.
In between, after a great counter-attack, Cédric Bacabu failed to place his foot correctly in Mario Vrusai’s parallel turn.
There were much fewer phases in the second half, where purposefulness prevailed, especially on the part of the guests. However, in the 65th minute, Tsolakis led another rescue in place of Marvin Piersman, who had partnered with Manos Garthia.
Five minutes later, Rodini caught Juan Iturbe at the last moment, and in the 72nd minute, Sokratis Papastathopoulos’ header from James Rodriguez’s corner went over Cuesta’s crossbar.
At the 83rd minute, the stage that marked the game took place. Gray abandoned Dow, who tried to hold him back. The Jamaican scored, Tsolakis saved, Mateo Garcia shot in the middle of the phase, and Sokratis Papastathopoulos made a save.
However, Istvan Wadt turned the situation around and, in agreement with VAR, showed Dow a penalty and a red card. But Tsolakis defeated Gray again, keeping the score 0-0.
And without accepting it, Olympiacos finally scored the only goal of the match. After a pass from Diady to Samasekou, El Arabi broke the artificial offside and outscored Cuesta 0-1.
With two tied wins, Mitchell’s team have advanced to the Cup semi-finals and are gearing up for double matches with AEK, leaving Aris bitterly – for another year.
