Former Vice President’s Advisors Mike Pence Pence’s adviser said he found “a small number of classified documents” at his Indiana home during a search last week. The papers were “accidentally packaged and moved” to Pence’s home at the end of the presidential administration. Donald TrumpGreg Jacobs, Pence’s press secretary for presidential records management, wrote in a letter to the National Archives.
The letter, dated January 18, 2023, stated that the former Vice President was not aware of the existence of the documents and confirmed that he took the management of classified material very seriously and always wanted to help.
Jacob wrote that Mike Pence hired an outside lawyer due to the recent discovery of classified documents at his residence and former private office. President Biden. Jacob also said that the lawyer couldn’t go into the details of the documents because he stopped looking as soon as it became clear that the documents contained classified information.
The discovery comes just days after similar documents were discovered at Joe Biden’s Delaware home and his former office at the Washington think tank. As was the case with Biden’s documents relating to his tenure as vice president in the Obama administration from 2009 to 2017, documents found at Pence’s home were turned over to the FBI, CNN reported.
Donald Trump, during whose presidency Pence served as vice president from 2017 to 2021, is also under investigation by the Justice Department for illegal possession of classified documents while he was not in office. Trump, who had many more classified documents than Biden and Pence, blocked attempts to get them from the authorities. The FBI then ransacked Trump’s Mar-a-Lago, Florida residence to collect them.
A special adviser has been appointed to investigate Biden and Trump over the storage of these records. However, while Trump was quick to draw a parallel between the two cases and demanded a search of Biden’s home as well as the White House via social media, it appears that the circumstances surrounding the discovery of Biden’s files differ significantly. Joe Biden was never notified that he had official documents that he needed to return, and his team immediately reported the discovery of classified documents and returned them within a day.
CNN further notes that Mike Pence has “repeatedly stated that he does not have any classified documents.”
The news agency also said it was “not yet clear what the documents are about, their level of secrecy or classification,” and added that Pence’s team planned to “inform Congress immediately.”
