Japan: sunken cargo ship, nine sailors missing

The Japan Coast Guard continues an operation to search for nine crew members of the 6,651-tonne freighter Jintian, which capsized while sailing off Nagasaki in the southwestern part of the Japanese archipelago in the East China Sea on Tuesday.

By noon on Wednesday local time, 13 of the 22 crew members had been rescued, the search for the remaining nine sailors continued.

According to media reports, the first four rescued crew members were seen passing by a merchant vessel in a lifeboat. The Japan Coast Guard was unable to confirm or deny reports that other crew members boarded the lifeboats.

The Hong Kong-registered tanker, with a crew of 22, 14 Chinese and 8 Myanmar nationals, signaled an SOS at 23:15 on Tuesday (16:15 GMT), according to the Japan Coast Guard.

It was in a remote location, about 100 kilometers west of the Dunjo Islands, in a remote and uninhabited area.

The crash was recorded as a cold wave swept over Japan, with daytime temperatures hovering just above freezing, around 3°C.

What caused the crash of a truck carrying wood is unknown.

When Jintian issued a distress signal, strong winds were blowing in the area, according to the Coast Guard.
