Italian energy giant Eni struck new deals on Monday with Algerian state-owned energy company Sonatrach during Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s visit to Algeria and Meloni’s meeting with Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebun.
Meloni’s talks with Tebun focused mainly on the export of Algerian natural gas to Italy, with Tebun stressing, however, that the two countries intend to look for other areas of cooperation. At the same time, the Algerian and Italian authorities signed other memorandums of cooperation yesterday.
Italy turned to Algeria last year after European countries decided to reduce their dependence on Russian gas in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In April last year, Algerian Sonatrach signed an agreement with Italy’s Eni that will boost natural gas exports from Algeria to Italy via the Trans-Mediterranean Gas Pipeline.
