The announcement of the nominees for the upcoming 95th Academy Awards on March 12, with a few surprises but no major injustices, was completed yesterday. “Without injustice”, of course, by our standards, because many people probably shuddered when they heard, for example, about the nomination of Ana de Armas for the first female role. Just two days ago, Andrew Dominic’s Blonde received eight Golden Raspberry nominations (!), but now the Cuban star is (rightfully) up for an Oscar for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe.
When it comes to female roles, De Armas has probably been overtaken by the equally formidable Margot Robbie of Babylon, but Cate Blanchett (Tar) and Michelle Williams (Fabelmans) remain top picks. At the… corner, Michelle Geo, who also starred in the most special film of the year, could overtake them. All, All by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, stealing the hearts of the public and critics, collected eleven Oscar nominations – more than any other film this year; among them, of course, is the one for the best film, which, judging by yesterday’s reaction of the public to the announcements, is now not at all impossible to be in this unclassified post-Matrix of the 21st century.
However, the competition will be quite tough. Martin McDonagh’s The Haunting of Innsrin was mentioned nine times by hosts Riz Ahmed and Alison Williams, as was Edward Berger and Netflix’s No Younger Than the Western Front. The performance of the latter is also surprising, although more due to the fact that the atmospheric chronicle of the First World War has overwhelmed the so-called “technical” categories. On the contrary, “Ghosts” is nominated for all the major “Oscars”, and the star Colin Farrell is among the favorites for the male lead.

Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s All, All, which won the hearts of the public and critics, collected eleven Oscar nominations – more than any other film this year.
His main rivals will be Golden Globe winner Austin Butler – his own incarnation has earned one of eight Elvis nominations – and Brendan Fraser for his selfless performance in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale. The latter turned out perhaps a little worse than we expected, unlike Top Gun: Maverick, which, in addition to its triumphant release, redeemed Tom Cruise’s return to action cockpits with six Oscar nominations.
Another is Steven Spielberg’s Fabelmans, who also probably expected something better from his life’s work, but which seems rather “old-fashioned” – albeit great – for the taste of 2023. Otherwise, they certainly deserve attention – all three nominations were won by the Triangle of Sorrow. Ruben Estleun’s film, partly filmed in our country, with the Greek co-production “The Heretic”, after the triumph in Cannes, will also enter the bright Hollywood stage, claiming the Oscar for screenplay, director and best film.

In conclusion, however, despite all the surprises and complaints, it is clear from this year’s Oscar nominations that cinema is making a comeback for good. After two years of relatively poor harvest, apparently also due to the pandemic, the industry can now submit films from a broad cinematic spectrum for its top awards: classic Hollywood offerings like Fabelmans and Elvis, more artistic creations such as The Spirits of Inisherin and Thar, groundbreaking projects (All), grand productions that could set or sink entire studios (Avatar: The Way of the Water, Babylon), plus a film that has never been was shown in theaters (“No newer than the Western Front”), but it testifies to the status that online platforms now have. Whoever wins the favor of nearly 10,000 Academy voters over the next month and a half will undoubtedly have a good reason to win.
