With the assembly of the jury, the announcement of the indictment, the first positioning of 12 defendants and the formulation of positions and statements by lawyers both on the part of the civil suit and on the part of the defense, the 2nd hearing of the murder case was held. ended for fan reasons against 19-year-old Alkis Campanos and two of his friends.
The Thessaloniki mixed jury trial, which is being held in the presence of Alka’s parents, has been adjourned until tomorrow morning, when the first of 26 prosecution witnesses will be questioned.
According to the list of witnesses, one of the two friends of the unfortunate 19-year-old teenager, who was present at the bloody episode in the early morning of February 1, 2022 in the Kharilau region, is among the victims. is expected to be the first to testify.
At today’s meeting, the positions of 12 defendants stood out, who, when asked to briefly state their position, refused what the indictment accuses them of. Their main claim in the case of the deceased freshman Alkis Campanu is that none of them hit him or even touched him, although they all admit that they were present at the bloody episode.
They take the same stance on the allegations of injuries to two young friends of a 19-year-old boy, and only one of the defendants admits to hitting one of them. In their statements, everyone expressed regret over the fatal incident, and some offered their condolences to the family of the 19-year-old.
Wearing black protective masks and with their heads down, they had previously watched the prosecutor read the charges in the first degree and attempted murder together. One of them is additionally accused of attempted murder of the second young man who was injured, and the remaining 11 are accused of this case as mere accomplices in this act. All are also charged with fan-motivated assault resulting in death and bodily injury, possession of objects capable of causing bodily injury with aggravated provisions of the Sports Act, illegal possession and use of weapons.
An extension of the charges for crimes related to a criminal organization and prominence in weapons possession was requested by a civil litigation attorney by filing an oral action against the defendants. To this end, after the end of the trial, he requested that the protocol be sent to the competent prosecutor to investigate the above actions.
Tensions arose between the civil lawyer (s.s.: speaking on behalf of the Alka family and two friends) and the defense lawyers when the first, taking the floor from the court, presented his lengthy statement on the charge, as well as in the case, the role of each of the accused in committing crimes. The defenders objected that at this stage of the trial, this is not procedurally provided for, and the chairman of the court paused to calm down.
For their part, the defense lawyers (s.s.: there are now 25 of them, since each of the defendants is represented by two or even three lawyers) put forward their accusations, and some of them asked to be presented during the trial – through a projector. – video from surveillance cameras in the area of the incident, to show both the position and the course of each of them, in order to reduce their participation in the crime.
Characteristically, the defenders of the 12th defendant (s.s.: he stated that he was just a “taxi driver” who transported several of his co-defendants to the place of the bloody incident in his car) presented a model of the disputed area, with the help of which they would try to show the court the route and movement of the accused.
Meanwhile, short-lived tensions reigned outside the Thessaloniki courthouse that morning when a small group of protesters verbally disagreed with the defendants during their transfer. A little later, there were new clashes of the same people against passers-by, but the intervention of the police forces managed to prevent their growth.
