Berlin: Blackout flights on Wednesday due to strike

German trade union Verdi announces 24-hour strike at airport Berlin-Brandenburg (BER) for next Wednesday.

On this day, passenger flights will not land or depart from the airport.

According to the union, ground handling services, the airport management company, as well as aviation security are affected.

“In the current situation, the management company is forced to conclude that regular passenger flights to BER cannot be operated on this day, and taking this into account, it also notified all partners at the airport about the strike,” the management company said in a statement. the airport.

About 300 departures and arrivals were scheduled with about 35,000 passengers.

Verdi is demanding a monthly salary increase of 500 euros for ground staff and company employees, with the collective agreement valid for 12 months.

The German trade union said employers are demanding longer contracts for both ground services and the airport operator.

In addition to management, the company also employs firefighters, airport security and traffic control.

According to Verdi, 6,000 workers have been affected by the ongoing negotiations.

Negotiations for aviation security workers are underway at the national level, but seven rounds of talks have “virtually made no headway” according to the union.

“There is still no sign from employers that they want a solution,” the union said.

It also says that the talks concern “increasing overtime pay for night shifts, on Sundays, holidays and Saturdays, as well as improving the collective agreement on overtime pay.”
