Microsoft today announced a new multi-year, multi-billion dollar investment in artificial intelligence with OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT.
Microsoft declined to disclose the exact amount, but Semafor reported a few days ago that Microsoft was in talks to invest up to $10 billion.
The agreement marks the third round of collaboration between the two companies following Microsoft’s previous investments in 2019 and 2021. Microsoft estimates that the renewed partnership accelerate breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and help both companies commercialize advanced technologies in the future.
“Our partnership with OpenAI is based on a shared commitment to responsibly advance cutting-edge AI research and democratize AI as an emerging technology platform,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
OpenAI works closely with the Microsoft Azure cloud service. In July 2019, Microsoft increased OpenAI funding by one billion dollars, and this investment made Microsoft the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI. Today, the tech giant emphasized that with the Azure system, it remains the exclusive provider of OpenAI.
Microsoft’s investment will also help the two companies focus on the supercomputing business, this time on a different scale, and create “new AI-powered capabilities,” the statement said.
